STENCIL

  • Stencil Art is a form of Graffiti done using plates with cut-out shapes. It functions as a kind of open-air screen print.
  • It emerged in the 1970s in France (also known as pochoirs). It had its first hayday in the 1980s in Paris.
  • Stencil Art demands a certain amount of preparation since the plates must be created in advance. They are usually made of cardboard, plastic or laminated paper.
  • Stencils are ideal for creating multiple reproductions of a single motif. Combining stencils with colour allows for an infinite number of possibilities.
  • In the streets stencils are also used to spread political views, but they can also fulfill a purpose similar to the way TAGS function – as a signature to an artist’s work.

Getting to know Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois (1911 – 2010)

Quotes:

“My childhood has never lost its magic, it has never lost its mystery, and it has never lost its drama.”

“All my work of the last 50 years, all my subjects, have found their inspiration in my childhood.”

“When I was growing up all the women in my house were using needles. I’ve always had a fascination with the needle, the magic power of the needle. It is used to repair the damage. It’s a claim to forgiveness, it is never aggressive, it is not a pain.”

“The artist is lucky to be able to overcome his demons without hurting anybody.”

“The metaphors in nature are very strong… nature is a mode of communication.”

“I see the spider as the savior.”

“The repeating of one image and another image… means that what you can not say in words, you try to put in visual terms.”

“You have to repeat and repeat; otherwise people don’t understand what you are talking about.”
